Tabor in Iceland

Location: Reykjavik, Iceland 

Dates: February 7-11, 2025 (Winter Long Weekend)

Description: Students will spend the long winter weekend exploring the unique geography and geology of Iceland’s natural wonders from hot springs and geysers to glaciers and ice caves. We will start by delving into the country’s Viking roots, walking the colorful streets of the capital, and swimming in one of the country’s many outdoor natural hot spring pools. From there, we will head out along the Golden Circle and the picturesque south coast over the next two days with the hope of seeing the Northern Lights on a late-night excursion. Finally, we will finish off the trip back at Reykjavik to soak in Sky Lagoon before heading to the airport. 

Itinerary: 

• DAY 1: February 7
  • 3:30 PM departure from Tabor to Logan airport
  • 6:20 PM Flight from Boston to Reykjavik
• DAY 2: February 8
  • Arrive at Reykjavik airport at 4:30 AM.
  • Pick up vehicles
  • Check into lodging/eat breakfast
  • Rest time
  • Self-guided walking tour of Reykjavik (as a group)
  • Lunch
  • Perlan Museum
  • Dinner
  • Swim at local thermal pool in Reykjavik, Laugardalslag
• DAY 3: February 9
  • Golden circle - UNESCO World Heritage Site of Thingvellir National Park (9/pp, free under the age of 17)
  • Drive to the erupting geyser in the hot springs area of Geysir (free), pick up lunch before departing for Thingvellir
  • Hot Springs on way home with dinner – Hvammsvik Hot Springs
  • Dinner
  • Drive to hostel in Selfoss or Vik
• DAY 4: February 10
  • Breakfast
  • Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach
  • Lunch
  • Ice cave tour
  • Skaftafell Ice Cave + Hike
  • Dinner
  • Return to hostel
• DAY 5: February 11
  • Breakfast
  • Check out of lodging, drive to Blue Lagoon, 3 hours
  • Visit to Blue Lagoon
  • Check in at airport
  • 4 PM Flight from Reykjavik to Boston, arriving at 5 PM EST
  • Bus back to Tabor

Requirements: A passport valid for 6 months after the conclusion of the program; certain countries may require a visa for entry. Students must have passed the Tabor swim test and be capable of hiking on snow-covered terrain. Students must be in good academic and community life standing to participate. Students will be covered by school trip and travelers’ insurance that covers emergency care and evacuation, although they must also have personal health insurance.
