The Tabor Academy Sailing Center builds on a rich maritime tradition that dates back to the school’s founding in 1876. Tabor embraced its identity as the School by the Sea in 1916, and since then, its sailing program has flourished, earning national and international recognition. Today, Tabor continues to produce some of the most accomplished sailors in interscholastic sailing. 

During the 1980s and 1990s, Tabor Academy’s sailing teams dominated the national stage, winning multiple championships, including five national titles in the 1980s alone. Notably, from 1981 to 1983, Tabor sailors captured the national interscholastic sailing championship for three consecutive years, establishing a legacy of excellence. In 1990, the team achieved dual victories, winning both the U.S. National Team Championship (Baker Trophy) and the Schools International Team Racing Championship (Rondar Shield) in England. Most recently, Tabor won the High School Keelboat National Championship in December 2024. 

The program’s success is deeply rooted in its emphasis on teamwork, strategy, and sportsmanship. Tabor’s emphasis on team racing has fostered cooperation and tactical skill, a philosophy championed by long-time coach Toby Baker, after whom the Toby Baker Trophy is named in recognition of his contributions to the sport. Many Tabor sailors have gone on to compete at the highest levels, including college sailing championships, international competitions, and even the Olympics. 

Looking ahead, Tabor Sailing is excited to push the boundaries of the sport by building programs dedicated to foiling—the cutting-edge technology that’s revolutionizing sailing. Foiling lifts boats above the water’s surface, enabling speeds and agility previously unimaginable. Our commitment to innovation ensures that Tabor remains at the forefront of sailing excellence, offering students the opportunity to engage with the future of competitive sailing.
