Winter Family Weekend Up Next!

Soon after the long winter weekend, it will be time for the highlight of our winter season at Tabor: Winter Family Weekend, February 14-16!
Rather than the mini-classes offered in the fall, this time of year parents are welcome to shadow their child through a typical full day at school (if they dare!).  For those hoping for a broader overview, they are welcome to roam a bit; in fact, the ceramics studio is open at any time for drop-ins, always a relaxing and inspiring place to spend time. Beyond that, other programs are also showcasing their opportunities throughout the class day as well.
Parents can learn about our summer programs or senior projects; they can explore the MakerLab or check out what teamwork means in Robotics.  They can enjoy a rehearsal of the Women’s Chamber Choir, learn what goes into a music recital, the musical or the Black Box play, or learn about faculty professional development. If all that is too much interaction, they can sit back and relax and enjoy a documentary film about the History of Tabor Rowing, created by Jack Gordon’17 for his Senior Project.
After a nice reception and dinner, some might decide to catch the boys basketball teams as they take on Milton, starting at 5:45 PM, before the main event of the evening:  Heathers: The Musical. Settle in by 7:30 PM sharp, as the cast and crew are eager to share all their hard work with you! With some tough themes about life as a high school teenager, the show deals with some difficult material but handles it in a satirical way.
On Saturday, families will have a chance to hear from John Quirk about general school news, learn about a new chapel project we are undertaking, as well as understand how our students are working in the local community.  A useful seminar for all parents will be the presentation from our pros at Smart Track College Funding called College Funding Strategies and Financial Aid 101. These financial advisors are available, by appointment, for one on one consults, as are our college counselors throughout the morning. Afternoon games in ice hockey, squash, and basketball begin at 1:00 and continue throughout the afternoon in the Fish Center rounding out the weekend.
All in all, it should be a great weekend to see all the different ways our students are engaged in activity here at Tabor. We can’t wait to welcome everyone back to campus! Don’t miss it….

  • Winter Musical

Tabor Academy invites the public to their performance of their winter musical, Heathers: The Musical (HSE) on February 14-16 at 7:30 PM.
Heathers: The Musical, a satire dealing with the challenges of teen life, became an Off-Broadway hit in 2014. Because the subject matter was so relevant to high schools, the creators of the show, Kevin Murphy and Laurence O’Keefe, worked closely with Pearce High School in Richardson, TX, from 2015 through 2016 to develop a “toned-down,” high school edition (HSE) of the show. Tabor’s director, Mark Howland said, “While Heathers: The Musical (HSE) delves into such hot-button topics as body shaming, sexual harassment, and suicide, it does so with humor and sensitivity. The creators have claimed in fact that they feel the show is about female empowerment. Rather than avoid these taboo topics, Heathers: The Musical (HSE) tackles them head on but through the lens of satire, showing us that high schoolers need to be kinder to each other, and adults who work with them need to be more clued in. Our goal is that the show be a catalyst for the school community to further awareness and empathy.”
The show runs February 14, 15, 16 at 7:30 PM in Tabor’s Fireman Center for the Performing Arts in Hoyt Hall at 245 Front Street, Marion. It is free and open to the public, no tickets or reservations required.
