Tabor Takes the Plunge

Sunday morning at Silvershell Beach in Marion, something out of the ordinary and wonderful happened. With the temperatures in the 40s and the water just about the same, under overcast skies, about 100 people rushed the beach and plunged in to the cold waters to help raise awareness for Special Olympics Massachusetts.
Organized by the Tabor Special Olympics Club, the event enjoyed support from Uncle Jon’s and Flik, our food service provider, who provided hot chocolate, cookies and other goodies to the plungers.  Also, Marion’s EMS services were on hand to help ensure the safety of each plunger. Head of School John Quirk, Dean of Students Mel Bride, History Teacher Gary Sousa and Associate Head of School Julie Salit turned out with terrific costumes, increasing the spirit of the event.

The student committee publicized the event, handled all of the organization with the town and vendors, registered plungers, and raised over $12,000, more than double their goal of $5,000! The money will support approximately 24 athletes for an entire year of programming.
We were pleased to see so many members of the faculty and staff, almost the entire health center, some parents, some of our athlete participants, and many student supporters plunging. We also enjoyed a great deal of support from the Sandwich High swim team and hope they will remain involved next year! The crowd of spectators loudly cheered the group in and out of the water….a trip that lasted about 30-40 thrilling seconds. It was very spirited and really fun to see everyone come together. The Special Olympics Club, which also hosts the Young Athletes program on Sunday afternoons, is now looking forward to their next big event: the second annual Special Olympics Basketball Tournament at Tabor on February 12. A wonderful success last year, we encourage everyone to turn out and get involved.
Many thanks to Campbell Donley, Kat Mitchell, Annalisa Souza, Leah Wolff, Brian Lee, Christopher Mills, Grace Ryan, Tali O’Leary, and Gabby Barresi who made our first plunge such a success. We appreciate their effort to bring us together in support of a wonderful organization!  Looking forward to more fun on February 12!
