The Braitmayer Ceramics Studio provides a dynamic and nurturing environment for students to recognize their artistic potential and to develop skills to communicate visually. The art department’s philosophy affirms that a future worth having depends on being able to construct a vital relationship with the arts. An integral part of our curriculum is to take advantage of our proximity to Boston, Providence, and New York where students have the opportunity to visit museums and attend lectures.
Six ceramics courses are offered during the academic day at various levels. In addition, students can elect ceramics as an after-school activity as part of Tabor's co-curricular offerings. The studio is also open on Sunday afternoons for ceramics students who wish to pursue independent projects on their own time.
Exhibition and Visiting Artist Opportunities
There are many opportunities for students to exhibit their own work. Constantly revolving student exhibitions throughout the year, and senior projects in the visual arts, are of the highest quality. Graduating seniors have an annual group exhibition in the spring, offering the school community the opportunity to see what can be accomplished through concentrated work over four years.
For three consecutive years, Tabor students have been recognized at the annual exhibition of the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts. This exhibition is the premier, juried exhibition for student ceramic work in the country. Most of the Tabor students who were accepted in this exhibition also received awards, scholarships, and commendation for the high level of their work.
Our Visiting Artist Program and Tomlinson Fellowship allow us the opportunity to host artists from around the world for weeklong residencies. These residencies are coupled with exhibitions and lectures and provide students with the opportunity to witness talented artists at work in the studio. Often graduate students of the University of Massachusetts exhibit their work and present slide lectures for our students, many of whom are current leaders and educators in their disciplines.
