'Tis the SEAson for Student Art

This December, Tabor Academy is proud to announce the winner of the Fourth Annual Winter Moods Holiday Card competition: Yuki Zhou ’27. Selected for her creative and engaging design, Yuki's artwork will be featured on Tabor’s 2024 print and digital holiday card, a creative tradition that connects the members of #SeawolfNation both near and far.

Yuki, who created her winning piece digitally, explains that the waterfront holds a special place in her heart. “I feel like Tabor is known for the waterfront. In the winter, there is snow, and I think it’s really pretty,” she shares, reflecting on the inspiration behind her artwork. Hailing from Shenzhen, China, a city known for its warm climate, Yuki experienced her first snowy winter at Tabor last year. “I think of the snow because I come from a place where it never snows … it was my first experience living in the cold,” she says.

When asked about how she felt about winning, Yuki admits, “It feels unreal because I never thought I would actually win.” Her entry stood out for its skillful technique, strong representation of the Tabor spirit, and ability to capture a wonderful “Winter Mood.”

“I wanted to draw something related to Tabor,” Yuki says, discussing her digital illustration of the Tabor waterfront. She notes that while she’s not taking any drawing classes this year, she hopes to take Advanced Topics (AT) art in the future. “My favorite artwork to do is digital art, drawing on iPads,” she adds, mentioning that she enjoys working in an anime-style.

Yuki joins the ranks of several talented student artists whose work has been featured on Tabor’s official print and digital holiday cards since 2021. Students enter their artwork into this juried competition that welcomes artwork of any medium, including digital art, paint, photography, animation, and ceramics. In their designs, Seawolves consider the colors, shapes, and feelings of a winter scene—one that captures the spirit and season at the School by the Sea.

This year, Yuki’s winning design captured the beauty and joy of Tabor in winter. The School by the Sea looks forward to sharing her artwork across the Tabor family, sending a message of warmth, connection, and “Seas & Greetings” to all.

Congratulations, Yuki, on this wonderful achievement, and thank you to all the talented students who shared their work and creativity in this beloved school tradition. You can see a slideshow of the submissions below.
