The First TaborX Day of Service

The First TaborX Day of Service

Tabor Academy’s Day of Service looked a little different this year. On Wednesday, April 19, 2023, Tabor combined its annual Day of Service with its new experiential learning program, TaborX, and participated in programming both on and off campus.

Traditionally, service projects have been organized by class year. During last year’s Day of Service, the 9th grade class travelled to Round the Bend Farm while the rest of the school participated in the Special Olympics. By segmenting activities through TX groups, the Tabor community was able to partner with more organizations and make a greater impact on the world around it.

Several TaborX groups spent their day picking up trash and leaving spaces better than they found them— including beaches, highways, and Fort Phoenix.

Tabor TeeX visited Marion Golf Course to help them prepare for the summer season. Tx Outing Club and Tabor Campus History TX spent their morning at the Sippican Land Trust on the Osprey Marsh and the Tucker Francis Trail. Later, the Tabor Campus History Tx shared their StoryMaps projects, where students used vintage and current photos to map changes to campus buildings over time.

At the Boys & Girls Club in New Bedford, ImprovTx worked with kids to clean the outside yard, plant flowers, play games, and more. This partnership meant a lot to LaShauna Barboza ’00, Tabor alumni and parent, and board member of the Boys & Girls Club New Bedford. She says, “The Improv group did an amazing job with our club members and the facility itself! My goal is to grow a strong relationship between the two communities over the coming years.”

In addition to environmental service, there were other meaningful service opportunities offered.  Those in the All-A-Taut-O-Tx worked with Bikes For All, fixing donated bikes to be given to families in need. Back on campus, Write and Bite and Tabor Made joined forces to write over 150 letters for Girls Love Mail and Love For Our Elders. The KnotTx crew packed purses for the Essential Purse Project in collaboration with Walt’s Mobile Closet.

“Thank you so much for supporting Walt’s Mobile Closet and our event for under-served women in our communities,” exclaims a representative from Walt’s Mobile Closet. “You are making a difference!”

In a note to the faculty and staff, Director of Community Service Tamar Cunha says, “What we say is true, Seawolves Show Up!  If you think about it, we provided over 800 person-hours of community service today across the Southcoast.  Whether you were picking up trash, maintaining trails, cooking for those in need, or helping one of our many community partners, your work today made a difference, and I am so grateful to be part of this community.”
