Report from our UK trip:
The last week of June saw ten Tabor sailors hop across the pond for a UK adventure taking part in the British Schools Team Racing Championships, held at Farmoor Reservoir near Oxford, England.
The trip began with some history—a walking tour of Oxford University, the oldest University in the English-speaking world, and Blenheim Palace, birthplace of Winston Churchill. All topped off with traditional fish and chips with mushy peas!
Our two Tabor teams then raced in the UK champs in the U17 and U19 divisions, alongside 54 other teams from the UK, Ireland, and China. Frustratingly, despite two days of glorious sunshine, the wind didn’t really play ball, with very little on day one and too much on day two, which meant only about a quarter of planned racing was completed. Our sailors therefore had very little time to familiarize themselves with boats they have never sailed before. Despite this, our U17s put in a stellar performance finishing 2nd place overall, and the U19s ended up 7th place and picked up the “Founders Trophy” as the first international team overall—a trophy last won by Tabor in 1999!
The second half of the trip saw us head south to the Isle of Wight and the sailing hub that is Cowes, birthplace of the America’s Cup back in 1851. We chartered two J70s and were joined by a team from the local Ryde School with Upper Chine for some cruising and racing on the Solent; we covered a total of 44 nautical miles and for many this was a great first experience in keelboats.
This trip marked a resurrection of Tabor’s summer trips to the UK and Europe, one that we hope will again become an annual fixture. For our sailors this was an experience about so much more than another sailing regatta and many lifelong memories were made.
