Tabor Academy Welcomes New Associate Head of School
Tabor Academy is pleased to announce the appointment of Tyrone Black, Ed.D., as Associate Head of School beginning July 1, 2022. Dr. Black brings with him nearly 30 years of classroom and administrative experience in both secondary schools and higher education. The restructured Associate Head of School position fills an open spot in the school’s administration, and Dr. Black’s installment comes after an exhaustive national and international search facilitated by Carney, Sandoe & Associates. The search process included an internal committee of faculty members, as well as opportunities for students, faculty, and staff to participate in the interview process.

Tyrone also appreciates the unique nature of our wonderful community and will take care and thought in coming into relationship with the many different constituencies that make up our community. There is much work ahead, and I am thrilled to partner with Tyrone in this journey.”
Tabor’s unique programs and location proved to be enticing for Dr. Black, who is focused on a wealth of possibility for the school and its community. “The more I researched and learned about Tabor, its mission and essence, the more I realized there are significant opportunities here to help build a community of future leaders. Additionally, I was attracted to everyone's earnest and sincere desire to cause positive and impactful change in the lives and spirit of others both in and outside of the Academy.”
Founded in 1876, Tabor is a premier coeducational boarding school that serves more than 530 students from across the country and around the world. As the School by the Sea, Tabor offers an uncommonly beautiful setting for students in grades 9-12. The school provides a wide breadth of academic offerings for students to explore their interests, understand their strengths, and develop their critical thinking and communication skills.
“Anyone who knows me and has a sense of where my passion lies, knows that I absolutely love building people, healthy communities, purposeful journeys, and servant leaders,” says Dr. Black, who currently serves as the Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students at Goodwin University in East Hartford, CT. He has also served as the Coordinator of Dual Enrollment and Director of Early College Programs during his tenure at the University.
Previously, Dr. Black has worked as an admissions counselor and coordinator for multicultural recruitment for Roger Williams University in Bristol, RI and an Associate Director of Admissions at the University of New Haven in Connecticut. Dr. Black has also served as the Executive Recruiter/Associate for the Huntington Group, an Executive Retained Search Firm; as well as the Director of College Counseling at Cheshire Academy; Director of Multicultural Affairs for Quinnipiac University; and Director of College Guidance, Head of Middle and Upper Schools, and Director of Student Advancement at Wooster School. Additionally, he is the CEO and owner of T. Carlton Educational Consulting, LLC through which he provides college counseling to both domestic and international clients, as well as cultural sensitivity training for educational organizations.
In addition to his full-time work, Dr. Black is an ordained member of the clergy. He also conducts multicultural workshops and seminars across the country. He presently serves on the Board of Directors for Hartford City Mission, an organization that operates after-school and summer character-based programs for children and youth throughout North Hartford. Dr. Black is a former member of the Board of Directors for Journey Home which is a not-for Profit Corporation partnering with the community to implement the Capital Region’s (Hartford County) Ten Year Plan to End Homelessness. He also served on the Admissions Counselor Advisory Board at Miami University of Ohio; Queens University of Charlotte, North Carolina; and Westminster College in New Wilmington, PA.
Dr. Black holds an Ed.D. in Higher Education Administration and Organizational Change & Leadership from Benedictine University, a master’s in education from the University of New Haven, and a bachelor’s in English from Westminster College. He also attended Westminster School in Simsbury, CT, which gave Dr. Black firsthand knowledge of independent and boarding school life.
The search committee for the appointment of Dr. Black was chaired by Anne Gardiner and included Lauren Boucher, Jay Cassista, Nadine Cunningham, Jon Sirois, and Jocy Su. Bethany Daniels provided planning and coordination of the process. The school is greatly thankful for the hard work and professionalism of this group.
