Pizza, Pasta and the Past: Adventures in Italy

Earlier in June, a small group of Tabor students and two Tabor chaperones traveled to Italy. The focus of the trip was on art, history and culture, as they worked their way through thousands of years of history and hundreds of miles of coastline. The group of nine travelers began and ended the tour in Rome, heading south to the very tip of Italy’s boot before crossing into Sicily, trekking across that island including hiking an active Mt. Aetna, and heading back north to Rome. Along the way, they swam where the Ancient Greeks first landed in Sicily twenty-five centuries ago, saw Roman theatres, Bourbon castles, and Norman cathedrals, decorated meticulously by Arab Muslim artisans. In between times, they explored cities and towns, hunting down the best gelato and pizza, while trying to understand how today’s Italians live.

Day 1 - Monday, June 10, 2019  Fiumicino & Rome

  • Fiumicino port and beach

  • Piazza Navona; Pantheon

Day 2 - Tuesday, June 11, 2019  Rome

  • Roman Colosseum & Forum

  • Vatican City; Sistine Chapel; St. Peter’s Basilica

  • Trevi Fountain; Spanish Steps

Day 3 - Wednesday, June 12, 2019  Capri & Sorrento

  • Ferry to Capri island through the Tyrrhenian Sea

  • Boat cruise tour of Capri; walk to Giardini di Augusto (is this the correct name?)

  • Ferry to Sorrento

Day 4 - Thursday, June 13, 2019 Messina & Giardini Naxos

  • Long bus ride through Reggio Calabria and ferry to Messina

  • Swimming in the Ionian Sea

Day 5 - Friday, June 14, 2019  Taormina & Etna

  • Tour of Taormina: ancient theater of Taormina and English gardens of Florence Trevelyan

  • Mount Etna

Day 6 - Saturday, June 15, 2019  Siracusa

  • Tour of Siracusa: ancient theater; limestone quarries; the Ear of Dionysus

  • Town of Ortygia: kayak water polo; small windy streets

Day 7 - Sunday, June 16, 2019  Palermo

  • Tour of Palermo: Teatro Massimo; walk down the main street to Quattro Canti with the four corners; San Cataldo church (arabic style three domes and tower)

  • Visit to the Cathedral of Monreale

  • Return to Palermo: Cappella Palatina; Palazzo dei Normanni; Palermo Cathedral

Day 8 - Monday, June 17, 2019 Pompeii

  • Tour of Pompeii

  • Return to Rome
