Matt Mones to Head up Girls Soccer Program
Tabor Academy is pleased to announce the appointment of Matt Mones as the next head coach of the girls varsity soccer team. He will also serve the school as Assistant Director of Athletics beginning in the next academic year.
Mones comes to Tabor from Brown University, where he served as the Associate Head Coach and Recruiting Coordinator for the women’s soccer program. He also previously held positions as an assistant coach at Yale University and the University of Hartford. During his decade at Brown, the Bears rose rapidly in the Ivy League: The program developed All-Americans along with Ivy League Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year, twice won United Soccer Coaches East Region Staff of the Year, won four consecutive Ivy League championships, and won its first NCAA tournament match in almost 30 years.
In Mones’ single season at Yale, the program had its highest recruiting class in school history. As an assistant at Hartford, the staff won the America East Coaching Staff of the Year and the team was the America East regular-season champions.
Mones says that he’s excited to focus on developing his players as people and athletes. “What really stood out for me about Tabor was the commitment to doing things at a very high level in a way that's really centered on the whole student,” he says. “The more I learned about the community, the faculty, the student body, and about how supportive everybody is, the more I felt like Tabor is a place where athletics are used as a platform to teach leadership, accountability, and resilience.”
In addition to his collegiate background, Mones brings 18 years of youth coaching experience from Yankee United Futbol Club, Bruno United FC, and Scorpions SC RI. Throughout his career, he has mentored numerous athletes who have successfully transitioned to the collegiate and professional levels.
“Matt’s deep knowledge of the sport, commitment to his student athletes, and understanding of what it means to be in a school where academic excellence is crucial to the overall success of our students is paramount to what makes him such a strong fit for this position,” Director of Athletics Kelly Walker P’12, ’13 says. “We are excited to have Matt’s leadership guiding and shaping our girls’ soccer program and are confident that he will continue to build on the strong foundation of our program.”
Mones respects the program’s long history of success. “My goal is to compete for the ISL and NEPSAC championships,” he says. “Tabor has already produced a lot of college athletes, and I will take a lot of pride and be very passionate about helping players bridge the gap to the next level and realize their potential as potentially college-bound student-athletes.”
