International Dinners Return!

Once again, International Dinners return to Tabor! This month, the Tabor community welcomed back the annual culinary extravaganza. While this much-anticipated tradition looked a bit different - food preparation and serving had to be modified this year to adhere to pandemic protocols - students and faculty enjoyed the first of a few special nights of Asian delights.

Typically, dinners are spread over the month of February as staggering these meals ensures that all Tabor community members have the opportunity to enjoy a special meal at some point. This also allows time for each country group to introduce and explain menus, ingredients, and any cultural context before their featured dinner.

This year, the events will continue on three nights, starting with a celebration on the Chinese New Year on Friday, February 12. The menu consisted of Lamb Kebabs, Assorted Dumplings, Scrambled Eggs with Tomatoes and Braised Beef and Noodles. Various Tabor international student groups built and planned the menu, and with help from Mike Sirianni and Dining Hall staff executed, cooked and served the dishes. The dinner was a big success!

Faculty mentor and Associate Director of the International Center, Rick DaSilva ’89, said, “Deep down the flavor of the event was with us, but protocols meant limited participation.” Tabor’s international students will continue these dinners next week when students from Thailand, Vietnam, Japan and Korea plan the menu. The final week will feature an even more diverse set of fare when the featured menu will include Caribbean, Middle Eastern, and Latin American dishes as well as items featured to celebrate the end of Tabor’s celebration of Black History Month. We are so very thankful to the students and the dining hall chefs and staff for being so willing to keep one of our most cherished traditions intact.
