Alum Visits Set and Costume Design Class

On Monday, alum Charlie Babbitt ’08 virtually visited Tabor’s Set and Costume Design class to talk about being a lighting designer at Tabor, and a professional lighting designer as an adult. Charlie started off the chat by talking about his time at Tabor and how he got into lighting design. “I took Mr. VanVoris’s lighting class and found I really enjoyed it. I decided that I wanted to do the winter musical and help out on that. I love getting into the nitty-gritty of the actual builds so I kept doing it and ended up designing the winter drama my sophomore year and the winter musical my junior year.”

With some background out of the way Charlie went on to show the class some photos of lighting set-ups that he had done in college and in his professional life. The students were excited to hear about his experience working on a fashion week show and what he learned from working on his senior thesis. Charlie gave helpful tips and insight into how he creates lighting for his work including quotes from professionals that he has worked with.  “I had a lighting designer who said, ‘most lighting designers think of themselves as a painter, but I prefer to think about myself as a sculptor.’ Because that's what light does, it brings out form and texture if you are using it in an effective way.”

Charlie even touched on what to do if you are having trouble relating to, or being excited about a production. “I think finding that element that excites you the most about the play is so important. There may be times you might not be excited about a play for whatever reason but you've got to get it up and designed so finding that element and exploring it in as many ways as possible is a huge way to break through.” He then went on to give the students some idea generating exercises that have proven helpful to him when he is creatively stuck.

It’s always great when a Tabor alum takes time out of their busy schedule to talk with our current students and having Charlie visit with Mrs. Hawley and her class was no exception. We thank Charlie for his time and insights into his profession and we look forward to viewing more of his work moving forward. Go, Seawolves!
