Hybrid Learning Keeps Us Connected

With the 2020-21 school year underway, Tabor Academy is staying connected to our international students with hybrid learning methods. Our international student community hails from seventeen countries and regions: China/Hong Kong, Korea, Mexico, Japan, Thailand, Bahamas, Saudi Arabia, Colombia, Taiwan, Canada, Egypt, UK, Bermuda, Jamaica, Switzerland, Vietnam, and Australia. Forty-five international students have started the year on campus, with five more students returning to campus in the coming weeks. Nearly all the international students studying at home hope to arrive in early January for the resumption of classes after our long break and online study in December.

For the 75 international students beginning the year online, all Tabor classrooms have been set up with the technology to allow for synchronous learning, where students virtually join their classes while faculty are teaching and are able to engage in live discussions with classmates. While there were some technology hurdles in the first few days, the students are appreciative and positive about the learning experience. Additionally, advisors, house parents, and afternoon program leaders are key links for remote learners, especially new International Students, during these opening weeks.

Our students from China are participating in the “OnBoard” program that has been set up and is being run in Beijing and Shanghai by alumni Nini Suet ’03 and her colleagues at Shang Nancy Friends Ltd. The program includes academic support, social interaction, and co-curricular activities which, with permission from our Athletic Department, can replace a student’s fall co-curricular program. OnBoard learning advisors will make routine reports which get shared with Tabor advisors. In a world where distance seems further than ever, we are making every effort to bring our students closer to “home” at the School by the Sea.

  • Forecaster's Series: Dr. AJ Troiano '06 - The Future of COVID-19

The Forecasters Series showcases alumni leaders and up-and-comers in their industries who will "forecast" the next 18 months in their respective areas of expertise. Epidemiology, higher education, and professional sports are just a few of the topics slated for discussion. This collection of leaders is sure to help you understand the changes in their fields and explain how these changes may alter your daily lives. Whether your interest is professional or personal, these one-hour presentations are sure to enlighten, and help all of us navigate the future.

A forecaster himself, Bruce Cobbold, taught us Heraclitus’ famous axiom, “Change is the only constant in life.” While this may never be truer than it is today, we are certainly better than ever at forecasting.
