Model UN Hits the Road

Our Model UN team enjoyed their first conference of the season in Seekonk, MA. As always, the Warriors of Seekonk High School did a great job hosting, providing a fun and accessible conference for all. Nine Tabor student delegates participated.

Each delegate joined one of the following four committees:
  1. UN COMMISSION ON THE STATUS OF WOMEN: WOMEN'S LABOR RIGHTS
Our students represented Bangladesh, Brazil, and the UK.
  2. FOOD AND AGRICULTURE OF UNITED NATIONS: GOLDEN RICE GMOs
Our team represented farmers in Bangladeshi farmers, Syngenta, an agricultural corporation, and Jorge Mayer, an agricultural scientist.
  3. THE WARREN COMMISSION
We played Lyndon B Johnson and Robert Kennedy.
  4. UN INTERGOVERNMENTAL PANEL ON CLIMATE CHANGE: THE BRAZILIAN WILDFIRES Danny Shannon won an award as the delegate from the United States.
This conference provided our newest teammates the chance to see what MUN is all about while watching our veteran participants show them how it’s done! The students have to prepare their positions and debate the issues. It is a wonderful way to learn about current events and persuasive speech. Most Model UN teams, like Tabor’s, are student-run with a faculty advisor to provide guidance as needed. This provides an important leadership lesson as the leaders and the teammates work together to prepare for each conference and strive to do their best. The group meets every afternoon as their afterschool commitment, which is considered a team activity.

The next conference will be a marathon event at MIT; a whole weekend devoted to learning and debate in February. The team has received their assignments and are now preparing their arguments and positions: Good luck, Seawolf Statesmen!
