Travis Roy Cup Tradition

The Tabor Boys’ Varsity Hockey team took on St. Sebastian’s this weekend at Tabor in the Travis Roy Arena for the 24th Travis Roy Cup. The game is played annually in honor of Travis Roy ’95 and to benefit the Travis Roy Foundation, which works to enhance the lives of people with spinal cord injuries through support and by funding research in search of a cure.

Roy was critically injured 11 seconds into his first game as a freshman hockey player at BU, sustaining a spinal cord injury that changed the course of his life. While Roy was never able to play hockey again despite his dream of someday going pro, he managed to return to school and finish his degree. He has since built a life of profound purpose as a motivational speaker and an advocate for those with spinal cord injuries. His foundation has raised millions of dollars and provided hundreds with the equipment they need to live a more engaged life. His speaking career has provided inspiration and hope to people around the country as he encourages us all to remember that life can change in a heartbeat, that what is most important is to love and support each other and take care of one another. He is an inspiration to all of us here at Tabor for his courage and commitment, and we are fortunate to enjoy his service as a member of our Board of Trustees.

It is great to see our student-athletes continue to rally around Travis year after year. We are proud that each member of the Tabor hockey program pledged again this year to raise $24 in 24 hours to support The Travis Roy Foundation. Conan Leary ’97, Tabor’s Athletic Director said, “While the game was exciting, the atmosphere was even better as the energy from fans, players, and coaches in the Travis Roy Arena was inspiring.” Indeed, the game was a nail-biter: tied 3-3 in the third period when St. Sebastian’s scored the game-winning goal with just 41 secs remaining. Even though St. Sebastian’s took the cup home to Needham this year, both teams were winners as they played their hearts out in support of a great cause. We are proud of each of them.
