Our boys’ squash team enjoyed expert squash training, team bonding, and the unique culture and antiquities of Egypt on their third Thanksgiving team trip since 2017. For the second year in a row, Cairo was the site of a one-week training camp for eight boys squash players and their coach, Mr. Downes, over Thanksgiving vacation. The group was hosted by the family of Aly Hussein ‘19, our top squash player over the last four years who is now among the top players on the University of Virginia’s so far undefeated team.
Aly’s family arranged for the team to train daily with coaches from Egyptian squash clubs. Downes remarked, “Egypt has many of the world’s best squash players, and our players benefitted from this intense environment.” The trip was further enhanced by two current Egyptian team members, Omar ‘20 and Abdel ‘22, who helped to connect the team with local friends as well as outings to interesting places, such as the Pyramids of Giza, after training.
Reed Porter ’20, a student from New York, said, “The squash trip to Egypt was an amazing experience. The sights were breathtaking, the level of squash was superb, and we lived a true Egyptian culture. This was one unforgettable week.” Mr. Downes agreed and added that “Through conditioning, training, and match time the team improved its level of play and gained unforgettable memories of their week in Egypt.”
Students will have a sleep in while the faculty meets this morning. Day students are welcome to come at the usual time for breakfast, if they want. Classes will meet through the afternoon and there will be no co-curricular activities.
