GAINS for Tabor

Molly McCarthy and Ali Mitchell are just two of many Tabor faculty on a mission to support girls in STEM: science, technology, engineering, and math here at Tabor. McCarthy, a math teacher and coach of strength and conditioning and track and field, came to Tabor in 2015 after teaching
in public schools. Mitchell is our new Nautical Science teacher and a graduate of Maine Maritime. These two had the good fortune of taking eight of our girls to Philadelphia this past week to attend the annual GAINS (Girls Advancing in STEM) Conference, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania.

At this annual conference for high-school-age girls, the group was exposed to all of the possibilities opening up in the workplace for women in STEM fields. Planned and presented by women leaders in the field, our students toured businesses, labs, and universities, hearing from women CEOs, research scientists, professors, and other thought leaders, and engaging in workshops to strengthen their design thinking muscles.

Tabor last attended the GAINS Conference in 2018 in New York City where math teachers Mackenzie Chaput and Christina Kennedy were the group leaders. The 2018 cohort came back with rave reviews and strongly suggested this conference for regular participation.

Tabor is committed to women in STEM and has made progress this year in attracting four more women to our teaching staff in both math and science. We are fortunate to have so many strong math and science teachers for our girls to learn from. As they mentor our girls and share their confidence in their students’ ability to problem-solve and create in any area of interest, we are opening sightlines to new possibilities, a gain for everyone.
