Faculty Chairs Announced

Today, in All School Meeting, we celebrated some of our very best teachers who hold faculty chairs in math, physics, English, marine science, and history.  The Faculty Chairs have been donated over the years, given by grateful alumni, to celebrate the excellence in teaching they experienced at Tabor. Each year we recognize our chair holders publically in front of our students to thank them for their leadership among the faculty, for their extraordinary talents in the classroom, and for the impact they have had on students and colleagues throughout their time at Tabor.

To begin our celebration, Julie Salit, Associate Head of School for Faculty and School Affairs, renewed the endowed faculty chairs for Dr. John Crosby, Chair in Marine Science, Anne Gardiner, The Rudolf Driscoll Chair in History, and David Pierce, holder of our newest endowed chair, the David Pierce Chair in Physics and Math. She then announced two newly appointed chair holders, a one-year chair for the Grayboys Leadership Symposium, and the James Gowing Chair in English as the previous chair, Kelli MsSweeny retired from her position last year.

Salit said, “I am pleased to announce that this year’s Graboys Leadership Symposium Chair holder is Mr. Nate Meleo.  Having served in various leadership roles throughout his careers in both the educational and military worlds, Mr. Meleo is hoping to create an experience for the entire Tabor community that is both relevant and engaging, bringing together multiple people in an event that fosters growth, pride, and fellowship among Tabor’s past and present.” The Graboys Leadership Symposium is an annual event we all look forward to as a chance to learn new leadership skills that translate well to our own work across the school.
Finally, Salit awarded The James Gowing Chair in English to Helene Sughrue. She said, Sughrue “has been described by her colleagues as ‘one of the kindest, most supportive colleagues, teachers, and advisors here at Tabor.’ She is patient and caring while she challenges all around her to fulfill the various aspects of Tabor’s mission statement.”  A life-long learner herself, Sughrue holds a BA in Government from Connecticut College, an MA in English from the University of New Hampshire, and is presently pursuing a certificate in mindfulness from Brown University. Since 1998, Sughrue has served the school as an English teacher, an Admissions Associate, faculty advisor to the Fore’n’Aft and to The Log, a member of the senior project committee, dorm parent in Foc’sle, and advisor to countless seniors in preparation for their chapel talks, to name just a few of her roles.  It was no surprise to see the faculty and student body jump to their feet to recognize Helene Sughrue with a standing ovation for this achievement.
