Tabor in the Big Apple

Last year, Tabor Admissions and College Counseling experimented with a new collaboration. They traveled to Atlanta, a city from where we have attracted some terrific Seawolves, to host a joint reception. The basic idea was to combine current families with those who may be interested in Tabor, with the hope that each group might bring some friends so we could expand our circle even wider.
It is a big step to consider boarding school, understand its value, and still another to actually get a family to road trip to Marion. For some, boarding school is a new concept, and we wanted to be sure the value was made clear. Thankfully, we were richly rewarded this year, attracting several fantastic students from Atlanta through this event for this year’s entering class.
Bringing College Counseling along turned the gathering into a great service to our current families, as well as provided some insight for our prospective families into a really strong program of support here at Tabor.
Additionally, we brought one of our directors of equity and inclusion to talk about everything from residential life, our equity work, the strength and purpose of our advisor system, and share what weekends are like at Tabor. Finally, a panel of current students answered all the questions the students and families asked.
As we try to make Tabor a reality for a wider cross-section of people across the country, these receptions are really effective as they are small enough for our staff to connect with each family and really describe the power of our learning living community. The families are appreciative of our effort, and it helps them to personalize the application process.
Due to the success of this program, we planned another event this fall at The Boys Club in New York City, hosted by Antonio Aponte. Of course, we will also be returning to Atlanta over Thanksgiving break. At the New York event, Lauren Boucher represented college counseling, while Christian Garris ’05 was on hand from Admissions. Bert Nascimento, a class dean and one of our directors of equity and inclusion, shared information about student life.
We were so grateful to our New York area students and their parents who took the time to meet with their college advisors over the long fall weekend as well as to share what they most appreciate about Tabor with a new group of prospective families. We will now have to wait to see if this effort will bear more applicants this year from New York. Given the great students who came out to join us, we hope we can count on a few more future evangelists for our great school from NYC!
P.S.: Applications are due January 31: Take the leap! Come be a Seawolf!
