Traveling Near and Far with Tabor

This year, there are many opportunities for students to get off campus and see the country or the world! The familiarity and fun of traveling with Tabor friends and faculty can make the experience more accessible for those students who may be hitting the road for the first time.

Tabor offers trips for all kinds of interest and a great many students take advantage of the opportunity to travel with Tabor every year. Faculty lead the trips, scheduling them during vacation times so that participants can totally immerse themselves in the experience. Most are athletic or enrichment trips, but there are also a couple of conferences our students are invited to participate in to learn more about an already established interest. These are planned by outside groups and are during school, which requires an extra commitment from the students attending to keep up with their coursework while away. Therefore, conference attendees are chosen through an application process. This year, Tabor students will attend the GAINS Conference (Girls Advancing in STEM) and the annual Student Diversity Leadership Conference. Conference trips:

11/13-11/15:  GAINS Conference, Philadelphia, PA
12/3-12/8:  SDLC, Seattle, WA

In sports, the squash team will once again travel to Cairo, Egypt, to enjoy some expert training with professional coaches along with some cultural experiences and sightseeing. Alumnus Ali Hussein ’19 began this trip a couple of years ago and has offered the experience again over Thanksgiving Break. Another such sports and culture trip will take place this spring when the sailing team heads to Bermuda over Spring Break. Here is the full line up of athletic team trips students can sign up to participate in:

11/22-11/30: Boys’ Squash Team Trip to Cairo, Egypt
3 / 8 - 3/12:   Boys’ Lacrosse to Orlando
3/15-3/20:     Baseball Trip to Vero Beach, FL
3/16-3/20:     Girls’ Lacrosse to Clearwater, FL
3/18-3/22:     Sailing Team to Bermuda
3/15-3/21:     Boys & Girls Crew to Deland, FL
3/16-3/20:     Boys & Girls Golf to Orlando, FL

Cultural trips are focused on language and/or culture immersion and provide an opportunity for students to practice their language skills or to just explore a new culture. Sometimes, these trips are combined with exchanges and homestays. Here is the line-up of cultural trips on offer this year:

2/1 -2/4:    Quebec City, Canada Tour (Winter Long Weekend)
3/5 - 3/11: Copenhagen: Exchange with Rysensteen Gymnasium
3/14-3/22: Beijing, China: Exchange with RDFZ Xishan School
6/6-6/19:   Madrid, Spain Tour
6/7-6/15:   Paris/Rennes, France Tour
Service and research trips are also popular with our students. This year, our students will return to the Gerace Research Center in San Salvador, Bahamas, to continue the work they began last spring building a coral fragment nursery. This year, they will go twice for one week in December and March (dates to be determined) to steward their past work and build on their progress. Beyond Gerace, we are offering two service trips on different continents this summer. Our trips to  Ecuador and Nepal will take place just after graduation and combine travel with a service project which typically includes some English language instruction and physically building some sort of facility with local craftsmen using local techniques. These trips sometimes include homestays. Here are our research/service trips:

December/March: Gerace Research Center, Bahamas (TBA)
6/6-6/14:   Ecuador Service Trip
6/8-6/19:   Nepal Service Trip

Finally, the College Counseling Office will lead a tour of Washington, DC, and Virginia area colleges over the long winter weekend, February 1- February 4. This is a great opportunity to have some fun and compare notes with peers as students visit two schools each day. They will have the chance to visit George Washington University, Georgetown or American University, University of Virginia, University of Richmond, and the College of William and Mary. SIgn-ups for this trip are already underway.

To express interest in these trips, students can request permission to join the community group on myTA, or email the faculty sponsor. Information about cost, travel, and more will be available on the trip’s community group page.

With all this opportunity to travel, and with Tabor offering financial assistance for many of these trips on application, Tabor students can enjoy the chance to see the country or even the world with their Tabor friends and faculty. A rare opportunity, indeed.

With the persistence of environmental change, people across the world are experimenting daily with different adaptive methods on the ground. With support from National Geographic and The Redford Center, filmmaker Alizé Carrère has been documenting innovative human adaptations in places such as Madagascar, Bangladesh, Vanuatu, Norway and the United States. From floating farms in Bangladesh to ice pyramids in the Himalayas, these stories reveal incredible ingenuity and resourcefulness in the face of environmental adversity. Alizé shares her experiences from the field looking at these unique examples of human adaptation, reminding us of the most important trait that has allowed for our continued survival on earth.
