Sharing Jewish Traditions

Rose Chaffee-Cohen, a new faculty member, loves the fall. For her, it is a time of “change, introspection, and gathering.”

Following the lunar calendar, the Jewish tradition celebrates their most significant holidays in the fall: Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.  Chaffee-Cohen explains that Rosh Hashanah is a celebration of the new year, “marked by symbols of sweetness, wholeness, and joy.” Yom Kippur, conversely, is a day of atonement. “Yom Kippur is our most solemn day where many Jews fast as we accept responsibility and atone for the unkind words and misdeeds done by ourselves and the wider community.  This process allows us to move into a new year with fresh eyes and hope.”

While practicing Jewish families celebrate these traditions in many different ways around the country and around the world, Chaffee-Cohen enjoys marking the end of their family’s fasting time with “break fast.” She generously invited the community, whether practicing Judaism or not, to join with her family in the spirit of learning and community, to experience their Yom Kippur celebration by enjoying special treats such as Kugel, bagels and lox, fruit, juice, and coffee.

No matter one’s religious practices or faith, reflecting on the year past and the year ahead for all the good and not so good that has transpired can be a thoughtful and helpful exercise for anyone. As we look back, we can learn from the past and set goals for improvement.

We are grateful for this generous offer to participate in the Chaffee-Cohen’s family tradition and thank them for including us. It was a wonderful evening of camaraderie and friendship.
