Celebrating Achievement and Connections at Tabor Day
On a beautiful fall weekend, on October 5, we have an opportunity to enjoy our School by the Sea together with faculty, students, parents, and alumni. An all-community day, Tabor Day is the one time when everyone is invited back to mix and mingle and celebrate Tabor!
We start out with a few meetings of our stalwart volunteers, alumni who help us organize our strategy for the Fund for Tabor and Reunion Weekend to ensure the best participation in both. Next, there are fun alumni and alumnae games to reconnect and renew relationships from the past. These are always fun, with alumni usually feeling winded and amazed at their former speed and grace in high school! After we gather along the sidelines, side by side with parents, faculty, friends, and townspeople to cheer on our common bond: The Tabor Seawolves. We celebrate our students on Tabor Day, in this instant during their sports competition, but in reality, it is them in their totality that we celebrate: their effort, their enthusiasm for their school, and all the ways they work to make Tabor the best it can be every day.
A new feature of this Tabor Day is our inaugural Circle of Excellence program. A program that celebrates the achievements of alumni and members of the Tabor Community. Six inductees will join the Circle, led by former honorees who have previously received the school’s Lifetime Achievement and Distinguished Service Awards. Two of the inductees, Jon Callaghan ’87 and Jacqueline Shire ’84, will be with us on October 5 during the morning from 11:15 AM to 12:15 PM to share their stories with us. Two others will join them later in the evening at our Southcoast Reception from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM, Amy Richards ’88 and Bill Phelps ’74. The final two are being honored in memoriam: our founder, Elizabeth Taber, and our 5th headmaster, Walter Lillard. We look forward to celebrating their achievements! When we asked the inductees how Tabor impacted them, it was no surprise that it was typically a powerful relationship with a faculty member that most influenced their future experience. Entrepreneur Jon Callaghan was impressed with our values-based community and expressed that Paul White’s belief in him when he was struggling in a tough class helped him to know that he belonged and could succeed, that “the fear of failure was far worse than just pushing ahead.” Jacqueline Shire, who works for peace at the United Nations, learned a love of learning from Guy DiNocenza and the power of a well-crafted essay. Entrepreneur Bill Phelps, who describes Tabor as “putting people on a path of achievement,” was most inspired by Richard Roller. Phelps witnessed Roller’s dedication to hard work and engagement throughout the community as a powerful example of the same level of engagement he asked from his students. Amy Richards, an activist, remembers her peers challenging her to define herself, as well as the support of faculty as she sought equal opportunity for Tabor’s girls during our school’s return to co-education. “Tabor put me in situations where I had to figure out my own values and how I was going to negotiate differences in my life.”
These stories are no different from themes that continue today. Faculty mentorship, inspiring and ambitious peers, values and hard work, opportunities to find oneself within the embrace of community. These are the things that make Tabor so strong. These are the common bonds we celebrate at Tabor Day. Come join the fun; be part of the enduring tradition: It’s Tabor Day!
