Today, the first day of the week-long Global Climate Strike, advanced by Greta Thunberg, was felt around the world as students and adults came together on 7 continents to raise awareness about climate change and action. While there isn’t much marching around Marion, Tabor students and faculty did manage to participate in spirit, but with more of an education angle rather than a strike.
In preparation for today, several of our science and English teachers joined together to research the many ways Tabor has acted institutionally to be good stewards of our environment and to present these positive actions to their students. They shared our successes in conservation through green building practices, high-efficiency lighting and heating systems, recycling programs, reduction of food and water waste, solar energy investments, etc. They also noted past student awareness campaigns that have taken place through club activities and Earth Day programs.
The point was to show positive action through conservation, communication, arts, technology or activism and to ask students what resonates or interests them most in this discussion. To further engage them, the teachers asked them to do a bit of research on their area of interest and to craft some sort of compelling communication: a speech, a poster or visual presentation to share the information they wanted to celebrate or convey.
All in all, it was a positive way to engage in the global discussion and to learn more about the many ways we have made progress, as well as to consider the ideas of others to better care for each other and for our environment locally and globally.
Students will have a sleep in while the faculty meets this morning. Day students are welcome to come at the usual time for breakfast, if they want. Classes will meet through the afternoon and there will be no co-curricular activities.
