In a school as diverse as Tabor Academy, we have an enormous opportunity to learn from one another. As we speak together, we want students to openly share ideas, facts, opinions and explore their beliefs respectfully. We hope to engage in many dialogues throughout the year while providing a level of safety for everyone.
In order to set a level and safe playing field, we have launched an effort to agree to Community Norms in our classroom and community discussions. Of course, we hope these norms will become our habit in any situation as we believe they help us to speak in a way that others can hear what we have to say, as well as help us to listen to the thoughts of others.
Starting with norms, and returning to them as a reminder, is one way to help ensure our goal to make every student feel like their voice will be and is heard.
As we encourage our students to "Be Here Now" and really engage with each other and our living/learning community, these norms will help us to be clearly understood as we explore difficult topics together.
Herewith are our Community Norms:
Speak from the “I” perspective and take risks
Listen, share and engage with positive intent – Be Here Now
Be willing to surface and explore subconscious beliefs and values – T.H.I.N.K. (True, Helpful, Inviting, Necessary, Kind)
Respect the personal opinions, experiences, and worldview of others while being ok with disagreement
Be willing to think about issues and situations with a new/different/expanded perspective
As Bert Nascimento and Kimberlee Williams, Co-Directors of Equity and Inclusion said, “We have to use words wisely.” As they shared the norms with everyone, they also shared this poem, which describes the need for this effort best.
“So powerful. They can crush a heart, or heal it. They can shame a soul, or liberate it. They can shatter dreams, or energize them. They can obstruct connection, or invite it. They can create defenses, or melt them.” – J. Brown
Students will have a sleep in while the faculty meets this morning. Day students are welcome to come at the usual time for breakfast, if they want. Classes will meet through the afternoon and there will be no co-curricular activities.
