Class Deans Aim for Impact

Tabor’s Office of Student Life is structured to ensure the best possible student experience. This year, the office will once again employ four class deans in order to maximize our positive student culture.

The class deans are grade-level experts, trained and experienced in the themes each class faces while also being knowledgeable about the issues teenagers in their age-group struggle with. Tim Cleary, Dean of Students, said, “The class dean’s offer so much to the students. They serve as everything from a sounding board, to a resource, to an accountability partner. They form important and impactful relationships with the students and serve an integral role here at school.”

Three of the four deans are new to the role, though not to Tabor. Kelly Walker has assumed the position of Freshman Class Dean. Walker has worked at Tabor for over 30 years as a faculty member, dorm parent, and most recently as Associate Director of Athletics. She is eager to be in close contact with students on a wider range of issues and is looking forward to developing programs that will create strong class cohesion and a sense of Seawolf Pride early on for our freshmen. She shared, “My goal is to help the freshmen start their Tabor career with a look into who they are and what they are hoping to accomplish over their four years here. I know they will have lots of helping hands in our community in the process.”

Rebecca Parente returns this year as the Sophomore Class Dean. Parente has a passion for teaching her sophomores about the benefits of healthy relationships. She has developed a program in partnership with the One Love Foundation that combines education with action. “I hope to raise even more money and awareness of their great cause this year while encouraging our students to be aware of the signs and symptoms of healthy and unhealthy relationships.” Parente, also one of the teachers of the freshman seminar, LEAPS, shared that she is eager to expand this learning to freshman, “I am thrilled to be having conversations around habits, leadership, and empathy with our first-year students.”

Bert Nascimento, Director of Equity and Inclusion, will also serve as the Junior Class Dean this year. Nascimento is in his third year at Tabor and has made strong connections with students in his English classroom, on the fields, in the dorm, and through his diversity work with students and faculty. He said, “My overall focus will stem from a theme for the year that is tied to one of our school’s mission tenets: Passion for the Highest Standards of Achievement. Upperclassmen truly set the tone for the entire school year and must lead by example.” With all that is expected of students during their junior year, Nascimento will be a powerful ally and support for them.

Lastly, Chris Rorke has moved from College Counseling to serve as the Senior Class Dean. His experience with this age group will be valuable as he helps the class keep the stresses of the college process in perspective while encouraging them to enjoy and make the most of their last year at our School by the Sea. He will focus on leadership, responsibility, and finishing up strong.

Each of these mentors will have an important impact on individual students, as well as on how the grade as a whole contributes to school life. The deans know that as individuals and as a class, students actually create the Tabor culture through their actions as classmates, teammates, roommates, and friends. Highlighting this reality through programs, leadership training, and mentorship, is the role of the class dean. In every grade, our students have a caring person standing by to share a new perspective, an encouraging word, and a warm smile as they work to make the Tabor experience the best it can be.
