An adventurous group of ten Tabor students and four faculty members traveled to the Mekong delta region of Vietnam this summer to join local villagers and crafts people in building a house and learning about local culture. Situated on a branch of the Mekong River, the house enabled a three-generation local family to move into permanent quarters in their village. At the end of the project when they all met to say goodbye, one of the family members said, “A family becomes a family when they have a home, and now we have our own place to live.”
During the trip, the Tabor group lived in a simple and attractive guesthouse along the river. They relaxed in the evening, and enjoyed meals alongside the quiet river with its boat traffic and scenery. Mr. Downes, the trip leader said, “The project gave everyone a feeling of achievement and connection to a new culture and location. Travel to new places and adapting to new environments is energizing and challenging, and we all gained insight and a special bond with each other and with our new friends from the experience.”
What a wonderful opportunity for Tabor students and faculty to learn together while serving others a world away!
