Mark Bowen ’92, a veteran, worked to create an important project that is helping to transition recent military veterans to civilian life by providing training toward a “second call to serve our country”: as farmers and leaders in the growing sustainable farming movement.
As President of Farmer Veteran Coalition of Vermont, a local chapter of a national organization with the same name, Bowen has worked with Sterling College in Craftsbury, VT, to build a training program for new farmers called Armed to Farm. There is strong demand for the program with over 50 applicants for the 25 spots available. The free program, hosted at the farm at Sterling College, offers varied instruction from classroom discussions about farming and business practices, as well as hands-on experience on the campus farm and site visits to area farms providing expertise and support to get started in sustainable agriculture.
Please enjoy this video, featuring Mark, created by the Vermont Agency of Agriculture that explains this creative project which provides an important option for returning veterans who are seeking an independent, entrepreneurial second career that is in service to others.
At Tabor, we are inspired by people, like Mark, who take time out to help others through creative problem solving and personal commitment to implement solutions to big issues for the benefit of all. We appreciate your service, Mark!
