Lettsome ’20 to sail in Pan Am Games

Thad Lettsome ’20 recently had a great time in the Netherlands where he joined 69 other Laser Radial sailors at Europa Cup in early June, he ended up 14th overall! Next, he set off for Gdynia, Poland, to attend a training clinic before competing against 56 other Laser Radial sailors from around the world in the Youth Sailing World Championship starting this weekend (July 13-20). Youth Worlds is a prestigious one-sailor per nation event and a pinnacle for youth sailors, according to a press release from the Royal British Virgin Islands Yacht Club. This is Lettsome’s third appearance at Youth Worlds. In December 2017, he was 33rd out of 51 in Sanya, China, and in June 2018, he finished 14th out of 58 in Corpus Christi, TX.

Lettsome will next represent the British Virgin Islands at the Pan Am Games in Lima, Peru, starting on August 3. Awarded a Universality Place, Lettsome will compete in the men’s one person dinghy event sailing a Laser, according to the press release. The yacht club shared that Lettsome is the first BVI sailor since the 1990s to compete at a PanAm Games which is also a qualifier for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Additionally, he has the honor of being the flag bearer for his country at the Opening Ceremony.
Tabor Sailing coach, Rob Hurd, added, “Thad is stepping up to sail the full-rigged laser at the PanAm Games, which requires more strength and stamina than the smaller Radial rig sail being used at the Youth Worlds. After some well-deserved rest in mid-August, Thad will be back at Tabor, where he hopes to repeat as New England High School Singlehanded Champion (Healy Trophy) in September and qualify for the National Singlehanded Championship (Cressy Trophy) in Santa Barbara, CA, in early November.”
Sounds like a great summer so far, full of accomplishment and adventure. We wish Thad the best of luck in all of his endeavor’s this summer. Go Seawolves
