Girls GAIN a New Club for STEM

As we look forward to the beginning of the year, Tabor girls interested in STEM will have a new club to enjoy. Faculty members Christina Kennedy and Mackenzie Chaput put forth a request for student interest and leaders, and of course they had a great response! Hannah Watt ’21 and Hailey Kim ’22 stepped up to lead the club.
The GAINS Club (Girls Advancing in STEM) will work closely with the GAINS organization and similar clubs from other schools to bring STEM speakers to our campus, to network with women in STEM-related fields, and to take part in online conversations.
The mission of the GAINS network is to connect high school girls and young women interested in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) with women leaders from STEM-related universities, labs, companies, and organizations from around the world. Each year, the Network hosts a GAINS Conference, which serves as the primary, in person, networking event.
Conference attendees always rave about the inspiring women they meet, the research labs and STEM related companies they tour, and the networking events in which they participate. The previous GAINS conferences have been held at The Whitehead Institute at MIT, Duke and UNC, Stanford University, and OATH in NYC, which we attended for the first time in March 2018.
This fall, the conference will be hosted by UPenn from Wednesday, Nov 13 – Friday, Nov 15. Tabor has offered funding to six students out of a group who applied last spring to attend the conference. Those attending will be asked to report back to the school community about their experience in some manner, whether it be a full school meeting presentation or an optional afternoon/evening discussion/presentation.
We are looking forward to this opportunity to engage more of our students in the exciting world of STEM. We hope this will be a fun way to learn together while sharing our enthusiasm for science, math, engineering, and technology. To learn more about the Gains Network, please visit this link.
