TABOR SUMMER BEGINS!
The Campers are Coming! The Campers are Coming!
Starting on Sunday, Tabor welcomed over 550 boarding and day campers for our 2019 Tabor Summer Camp. Day campers arrive bright and early this morning for their first day. Counselors have been here for over a week planning activities and getting ready for the start.
Klay Johnson, Director of Activities, is really excited to be back in Marion this summer running the many non-academic activities on offer….he quickly proffered a three page printout of everything going on. It is a mind-boggling wonderland of fun and opportunity!
From all the typical sports you would expect: swimming, sailing, gymnastics, baseball, flag football, and tennis to arts such as dance, crafts, art, clay, drama and jewelry making we have the basics covered. But then there is Rocketry, Minecraft, and something exciting called Adventures Galore! Johnson hopes through all these activities kids can learn “how to work on a team, and challenge themselves in a safe environment.” Most of all, he hopes they will build lasting friendships this summer while advancing their skills and learning how to best support each other.
John Crosby, Director of Academics, offers some fun for learners, too, as well as some coursework students just might like to get done this summer (like SAT Prep or ESL for our international campers). For the life-long learners we have Coding through Game Design, Bulls & Bears-Stock market, and Crack the Cube (Rubrics). There is also digital photography, creative writing, drone technology, marine science, and STEM Studio, just to get started.
With the strength of our programs and facilities at Tabor, we can add some powerful academic exploration to our typical summer camp. Crosby shared that our camp academics allow students an opportunity for enrichment while they explore topics not typically offered during normal school. “Where else can campers take advantage of a top marine science lab right on the ocean, or get their hands on a drone or all the great tools in the MakerLab? We are offering really fun opportunities to get into STEM: enjoying all the fun of exploring without the pressure of grades. I hope students will come and explore a new or continuing interest in greater detail and get elbows deep in their learning.”
Beyond these programs are more offerings focused on specialty subjects: Our MakerLab Camp starting 6/24, Marine Science Camp starting July 29, an introduction to our Artificial Intelligence course that we will offer in 2020 (July 8 to 12 ) or an immersive Chinese Language program (starting July 10). And, of course, our excellent sports camps for hockey, lacrosse, basketball, or strength training.
It certainly sounds like it is going to be a great summer here at Tabor!
