Travis Roy Foundation Recognizes Alec Durkin ’19

The Travis Roy Foundation wrote to us about the amazing effort of Alec Durkin who ran the Boston Marathon last month as one of their charity runners. It is a great story of a student participating on behalf of a charity that Tabor students have supported in many forms over the years as it was started by our alum and trustee, Travis Roy ’95.

Meagan McCarthy ’10 works as the volunteer Running Coordinator for the foundation and reports, “For the past seven years, the Travis Roy Foundation has had a small but mighty team of charity runners for the Boston Marathon. The age requirement for the Boston Marathon is 18 years old; as soon as we saw Alec’s application come through, we were impressed that he was already eager to take on this challenge! He told us how his cross-country team at Tabor has been like a family to him and how this brotherhood of runners from Massachusetts to Egypt to Japan has been so instrumental to his Tabor experience.”

Training for a marathon is a massive undertaking. For 20 weeks, Alec followed a training plan complete with short runs, cross-training, and long runs, increasing his mileage each week. Training also requires endless stretching, foam rolling, learning how to fuel during long runs, and dealing with the snow, ice, rain, and freezing cold temperatures that come along with a Massachusetts winter.

On top of that, Alec raised thousands of dollars to support the Travis Roy Foundation and spread the mission of fellow Seawolf, Travis Roy. Alec said, “What a great honor it was to have been selected to represent the Travis Roy Foundation in the marathon. I am proud of my efforts to train, fundraise, and run the race on behalf of the people the foundation serves. Running the Boston Marathon was one of the most inspiring experiences of my life, and I'd like to thank everyone who supported me along the way.”

The funds that Alec raised will go directly to spinal cord injury research as well as Quality of Life grants for spinal cord injury survivors. Ramps, wheelchairs, shower chairs, and beds can make a huge impact and allow those with spinal cord injuries to live more independent lives.

McCarthy, who has run the marathon herself as part of the team shared, “The Boston Marathon is one of the highest esteemed – and most challenging – races in the world. Although runners start on a downhill in Hopkinton, the rolling hills in Wellesley and the dreaded Heartbreak Hill in Newton make this course particularly difficult. This race requires dedication and a whole lot of heart to get through 26.2 miles.”

All of us at Tabor and at the Travis Roy Foundation are so proud of Alec for completing the Boston Marathon and will watch carefully to see where his love of running takes him next!
