Tabor Sailing wins New England Team Racing Championship

Tabor Academy cleaned up at the New England Team Racing Championship (President’s Trophy) this past weekend earning a spot at the Nationals (Baker Trophy). The win marks the 25th New England team racing title for the Seawolves since the competition began in 1974, and it is their second consecutive title in Team Racing. The regatta was held in SailMaine in Portland, ME, where the Seawolves will return for the Nationals next weekend.
The format for New England’s was an eight-school double round robin followed by a championship final four double round robin. The Seawovles entered the regatta seeded second by virtue of their 24-2 regular season dual meet record. On Saturday, Tabor complied a 12-2 record in the first two rounds. The day started with wins over Marblehead HS (MA), St. George’s (RI), Brunswick School (CT), Greenwich HS (CT), Milton Academy (MA), and Fairfield Prep (MA).  In the final race of the first round, the Hotchkiss School (CT) – the number one seed - beat the Seawolves. Showing some resiliency, Tabor went out and beat the same six teams again in qualifying round two before losing once more to Hotchkiss in a race where Tabor did nine penalty circles and still almost won the race. “That last Hotchkiss race was good for us,” said Coach Hurd in his post-game press conference. “We proved to ourselves that we could be resilient, and it meant that we had to enter the championship final four with a sense of urgency.” After day one, the results were as follows:

1. Tabor Academy (MA) 12-2
2. Hotchkiss School (CT) 9-5
3. Brunswick School (CT)  7-7*
4. St. George’s (RI) 7-7*
5. Milton Academy (MA) 7-7
6. Greenwich HS (CT) 6-8
7. Fairfield Prep (CT) 5-9
8. Marblehead HS (MA) 3-11

On the second day of racing, just the top four schools participate, sailing a Championship double final four round with scores carrying over. Only the top two teams qualify for the National Team Racing Championship (Baker Trophy), while the next two head to Cleveland, OH, for the National Invitational Trophy (NIT Regatta “Founders Trophy”). The sailing Seawolves went 2-1 in the first round of the final four, losing to St George’s in the first race of the day, but beating Brunswick and Hotchkiss, to open an insurmountable lead over the other three teams. Coach Hurd emphasized, “Unlike last year when it all came down to the final race, it was nice to clinch the championship early. It allowed us to give everyone some valuable experience, and it was less stressful on Coach Conley and me. The main thing we did well was to beat the schools that we should have beaten.”
Representing Tabor were co-captain Jack Howard '19, co-captain Harper McKerrow '19, Jack Corbett '19, Gabe McCollester '19, Anthony Minder '19, Cat Shakin '19, Thad Lettsome '20, Anna Olsen ’20, Henry Worden '20, and Menasha Leport '21
