One Act Play Time!

This week in the Black Box theater, one of Tabor’s favorite traditions will continue. Spring One Acts are here at last.
After fall and winter drama, the Ellesmere show, and the winter musical, Tabor thespians are calling the shots as they create an evening of entertainment in the Black Box. Typically, students interested in writing and/or directing create or choose a show or scene to perform. They then send out a call for willing actors, or request particular students with the skills they want. The effort is entirely student-produced, and as of now there are six directors at work.
The shows are a real creative commitment for all involved. Fit in around the edges of their other activities, it is a challenge for the directors to balance time constraints of their actors, as well as to schedule time in the black box for practicing. It all seems to work out though, especially as Tayler Rogers ’19, One Act Coordinator, is there to help keep everyone on track. She says, “One Acts are very close to my heart as there are few other opportunities at Tabor for students to try directing or for athletes to act. Now in my second year as coordinator, I can say I have learned a great deal about leadership through my role.”
The idea is to create a low-stress opportunity to share a skit or monologue or a short play and let everyone have fun with it. Sometimes the acts are serious, but just as frequently they are funny and lighthearted. It is all up to what the students decide to perform. The fact that new talent is likely to be on stage makes these shows exciting and entertaining for the whole community.
The one-acts have been a great place for students to try out something new, much like Open Mic nights. Students don’t have to take a class or have experience, they just have to have the willingness to put themselves out there for a moment under the lights! One Acts have launched the career of some of our best actors, and for others, it will be a singular act of brilliance.
Rogers says, “The diversity of participants make the Spring One Acts one of the most unique and attended productions at Tabor.” So, don’t miss this great spring tradition: Come to the Black Box May 9 & 10 at 7:00 PM or enjoy the late show on May 10 at 9:00. Be there!
