Course Selection Season

Well Seawolves, it is that time of year again! Time to clear the decks, pull out your four-year plan, and think about your best options for course work for the coming year. Faculty advisors play an important role in guiding students through the decision process—providing good counsel, helpful suggestions, an encouraging pep talk, and sometimes a wise word of caution (don’t take on more than you can handle!). Further, our college counselors are also ready to engage students who want to check their choices as they think about certain colleges of interest or courses of study at the next level. It is all a bit of a balancing act to meet requirements and interests with a challenging but reasonable course load as the annual goal.
Tabor has the luxury of what our academic office often touts as “a big school’s catalog with a small school feel.” We offer enviable breadth and choice across subject areas as well as the capacity to go deep in those areas that excite our students. With courses at the honors, advanced topics, and AP courses, there is a challenge level available to meet our students at every level. Above all, it is our small class sizes, the talents of our teachers, and the ambition of our students that allow both students and faculty to get the most out of each course experience, no matter the subject.
The process to all this discovery started right after Spring Break with the posting of our 2019-2020 course catalog. In all, there are over 145 courses to choose from! From environmental science, Spanish, creative writing, calculus, government and acting to world history, wind ensemble, Latin, engineering, and marine field ecology to so much more!
Our honors or advanced courses require prerequisites or the approval of the department in a chosen area—guidelines that we have established over many years of observing our students find success or difficulty in given classes. Our aim is to keep our students engaged and challenged appropriately, without over-taxing them. Advisors and other trusted adults are the keys to achieving this balance as they have the big picture of a student’s experience in mind, including all the co-curricular, club and/or leadership commitments a student might want to maintain or pursue. Let’s face it, it’s incredibly stressful to be in way over your head and it’s totally boring to be under-challenged. We are seeking that glorious state of balanced tension, flow, and excitement from our motto: ALL-A-TAUT-O!
Let’s do this together, Seawolves! Another year of learning awaits at our school by the sea!
