Transitioning to College

At Tabor, we want to do our best to ensure our seniors are just as successful in college as they have been here. In a new environment, we know there are new responsibilities and new freedoms that they need to be aware of; they aren’t kids anymore! The last trimester is time to talk about the transition to college.
To help, Senior Class Advisor, Chris Millette has pulled together a speakers series to get seniors thinking and talking about what is coming up. “The goal of our Senior Programming is to fully prepare out seniors for life in college by discussing topics that aren’t covered in a traditional curriculum. Using outside groups, college deans and Tabor alumni, we hope to provide the class of 2019 with a better understanding of what lies ahead,” says Millette. Topics include sexual consent, underage drinking, time management, leadership skills for high performance, how to integrate social and academic life with balance and wellness, and importantly, how to recognize signs that might indicate when a helping hand is required along the way. Millette has augmented the program a bit this year due to its success last year. “These are topics our students want us to talk with them about and we encourage parents to continue the talk at home. It will be important to them to hear your values and thoughts as always on these topics.”

Here is the schedule with links to each speaker’s website.
Monday, April 22nd  Speak About It: scenarios modeling consent in sexual relationships

Monday, April 29thAlden Mills, author, former Navy Seal, inventor: time management and leadership skills for high performance.

Monday, May 6thEric Estes, Vice President, Campus Life Brown University, balancing health and wellness with social and academic success.

Monday, May 13th - Recent graduates share their secrets for a successful transition

All programs are scheduled to start at 7:00 PM, except May 13. The alumni speakers program will start at 7:30 PM so we can enjoy the Chamber Music Recital together!
College should be an exciting, energizing time, but we would be naïve if we didn’t recognize that the new challenges and freedoms presented can make it stressful and uncertain for our students. Ideally, students can live up to their potential while avoiding common pitfalls. Our hope is that this speaker series will put the icing on the cake for our seniors preparation for college. It will no doubt open lots of great conversation about personal responsibility and preparing to get the most of what is sure to be a terrific next learning experience.
