Sailing Success Leads to Nationals

After hosting the O’Day Trophy qualifiers on Saturday (and finishing first overall), our sailors packed up and moved across the district to sail in the NESSA Fleet Racing Championship (O’Day Trophy) finals at The Hotchkiss School on Sunday. The team returned to Marion Sunday night with the third-place trophy and a berth to National Fleets! They will be representing New England for the Mallory Trophy on May 10-12 in Seattle, WA.

Rob Hurd, head sailing coach, explains that Fleet Racing is one of the three major disciplines of sailing. The other two are Match Racing (think America’s Cup) where it is just one boat vs. another, winner take all, and Team Racing, which is what Tabor does the majority of the time. In Fleet Racing, each school sends out one boat to the racecourse.  The boat accrues points equal to its finishing positions (1 point for 1st, 3 points for third, 10 points for 10th, etc.) At the end of the day, the lowest total points wins. In high school and college sailing, a school fields a boat in two divisions (A-div and B-div), each division racing separately. The regattas is scored the same way - the lowest total points for all the races in all the divisions is the winner.

It took a while for the Seawolves to find their stride on Sunday. At the mid-point of the regatta, Tabor was in seventh. “Then we started to climb the ladder,” Hurd said. Jack Howard ’19 and Menasha Leport ’22 won the final two A-Division races to pull Tabor into third place. Then Anthony Minder ’19 and Cat Shakin ’19 sealed the deal by turning a second-to-last place into an 8th. “We have spoken all year that to win a regatta like this, you need to turn bad races into not so bad races,” said Coach Hurd in his post-race press conference. “Anthony and Cat’s performance in race 7B put all the pressure squarely on our competitors.”

The squad will quickly put the excitement of this regatta behind them as they shift back to team racing with two big league meets on Wednesday (BC High and Portsmouth Abbey), before heading to Connecticut on Saturday for the Avery Point Quad with Hotchkiss, The Williams School (New London, CT), and Choate. Coach Hurd added, “We will turn our focus back to fleet racing at the beginning of May. This trip to Seattle is a reward for all the hard work we have done so far, but there is still much to accomplish this season if we want to reach our goal.”
