Last week, 13 Tabor musicians had the incredible opportunity to travel to Boston to see the Boston Symphony Orchestra in a closed rehearsal.
Getting up early and battling the traffic was worth it all when our students were able to see the professional musicians of the BSO in action. “It is rare to have a glimpse of a professional orchestra at work,” says Phil Sanborn, Director of Instrumental Music at Tabor. “It is an important aspect of our work to expose students to professional musicians and orchestras, and I am happy to have been able to share this experience with our students over the years. The music is always top-knotch and always a treat to listen to.”
The students were expecting to see Conductor Gustavo Dudamel, Music Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, but he had to suddenly withdraw from the concerts this week due to a flare up of an existing arm injury. Instead, the students were able to see James Burton, Music Director of the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, the substitute conductor for the piece being rehearsed, a piece by Venezuelan composer Antonio Estevez: "La Cantata Criolla". Sanborn said, “The students came away awed by the orchestra and the level of musicianship that was palpable in the room. It was uplifting and inspiring to see these great musicians at work!”
Violet Southwick ’20, a cellist said, “I thought the trip was inspiring, and made me wish I was a part of the orchestra. It was an closed rehearsal and not a performance, so it was interesting to see how relaxed all the musicians were. I could see the true enjoyment of every player.” Kyle Tabata ’20, a violinist, said, “I was fascinated by the singers and the orchestra combining almost perfectly from the first try, but always aiming for a higher quality with each new attempt.”
Sanborn explained that while Andris Nelsons is currently the Music Director of both the Boston Symphony Orchestra (in his sixth season) and the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, he does not conduct every concert. Most major orchestras rely on a steady flow of very qualified guest conductors throughout the season. Our students were lucky indeed to see the BSO at work!
