Siyuan “Daniel” Chen ’21, of Beijing, China, has been selected to take the 2019 USA Junior Mathematics Olympiad Exam. This incredible accomplishment followed his score of 141 out of 150 on the American Mathematics Competition (top 1.5% of the nation) and a score of 110 out of 150 on the American Invitational Mathematics Exam. His combined score of 251 was well above the threshold of 220.5 needed to qualify. Of the 40,000+ test-takers only 250 are invited to take the USAJMO, all vying for 1 of 10 spots on the junior Olympiad team.
The USA Junior Mathematical Olympiad (USAJMO) is an exam used to determine the top math students in America in grades 10 and under. The exam consists of 6 detailed solutions to short-answer problems. The test is administered over two days, on April 17 and 18, with invited competitors given 4.5 hours each day to complete 3 problems each day. Daniel will take the test here at Tabor.
While Daniel is preparing for the test, he seems to be optimistically keeping his cool. He said he is going to "just go for it and hope for the best!" It goes without saying that all of Seawolf Nation stands behind him in this endeavor 100%! He has already met an unbelievably high bar through his participation and is likely the first Tabor student ever to compete at this level. To see the company Daniel is in, please see a list of the other students invited to compete, grouped by school name. Let’s just say that Daniel has already won the ISL Championship for Mathematics, if there was one, through this invitation!
We are enormously proud of Daniel and wish him all the best in this final round of competition. It is a great testament to his curiosity and his love of learning that he has engaged so thoroughly in this effort, not to mention his teachers’ and peers’ commitment to supporting his highest level of achievement. The Tabor community and, particularly, Tabor’s Math Team could not be prouder.
