Adventures Abroad!

Tabor students and faculty are heading off on fantastic adventures all over the world in March.

Right after school lets out, another Tabor contingent will complete our second annual exchange with our Danish partner Rysensteen Gymnasium in Copenhagen. In all, 28 seniors and juniors and five faculty will participate including Rick DaSilva ’89, Wes and Makenzie Chaput, Bert Nascimento, and Kelly and Nate Meleo ’95. The students will enjoy a weekend in homestays before experiencing a week of high school life in Copenhagen! More than just a student exchange, this is also a great opportunity for our faculty to enjoy global study. The first year just two faculty, Anne Gardiner and Emily Kaplan, accompanied Rick DaSilva ’89, the coordinator, with 26 students. To have four new faculty attending alongside 28 new students is a great opportunity for broadening our global outlook at Tabor. In all, eight faculty and 54 students have taken part in the exchange. When we include the 30 or so local families who have hosted over the last two years, the community experience with global citizenship and cultural competency reaches deeper still.

At the same time, our fall drama troupe is heading off to Ellesmere College in the U.K. to share their show, Lucky Me, with the student there. (The show will do one pre-trip dress rehearsal in the Black Box on March 6 at 6:45 PM, if you missed it this fall). This exchange happens every two years and has been popular with thespians since its inception in the 90s! They will live in the dorms at Ellesmere, experiencing a British boarding school in the countryside of Wales. Trips to London and Dublin are also included in the opportunity, allowing a good look at the main urban cities of the U.K. Enjoy this blog post by Matthew Carvalho ’19 who is looking forward to visiting Ellesmere for the second time!

Finally, during the last week of break, a group of faculty and students will journey to Beijing on March 15th for a week of homestays, classes, and an introduction to Chinese education and culture. Visiting RDFZ Xishan School, Tabor’s partner school in Beijing, the Tabor group will journey to make our third March vacation exchange in as many years, to be followed by a group of RDFZ students and faculty who will arrive at Tabor in mid-April for a similar experience of education and friendship.  Six Tabor students will live with the families of RDFZ students, attending both regular classes and special courses in Chinese culture, visiting the Great Wall, and experiencing the life of a high school student in China.  RDFZ is one of China’s top high schools, and partnering with Tabor has brought a special global experience to both schools.  Faculty members Steve Downes, Rick DaSilva ’89, and Roxie Bratton will accompany the group overseas, joining in activities and classes for several days, and briefly visiting several nearby countries to represent Tabor and share congratulations with our newly accepted international students.

April will be a busy month at school as we host the RDFZ and Ellesmere College students returning to Tabor to complete their half of the exchanges. (Watch for news of the Ellesmere show in the Black Box while they are here in April. Their show is always a great expression of British culture and humor.)

As always, we are indebted to our Tabor host families for helping to build these special overseas exchange opportunities and relationships for our school. With every positive experience we have here at Tabor with visiting students from other countries, we see more interest from our students to travel abroad. A win-win proposition!
