NE Tournaments Begin with Squash

The Seawolves entered tournament season with our squash teams leading the way. Our girls’ hockey and girls’ and boys’ basketball follow their lead on Wednesday.

Girls’ squash earned the ninth position of fifteen teams in the New England Interscholastic Squash Association Class B Tournament. Tabor entered the tournament with two #1 seeded players: Tanya Mendoza ’19 (#6), and Anne Le Gassick ’20 (#7). Le Gassick was astoundingly upset in her first round and went on to win her next three matches to earn fifth place in the #7’s draw. Mendoza slipped past a very competitive St. Mark’s player (3-2) advancing to the finals before losing in five games to Hopkins and finishing the tournament in second place in the #6’s draw. Nina Sasakawa (#5) had the unique experience of beating Pomfret in the first round then re-playing Pomfret again in the fifth round where she lost in five games, finishing eighth in the #5’s draw. Meredith Mahon (#4) consistently surprised her opponents with her ability to volley the ball and finished eighth in the #4’s draw. By far the toughest draws for Tabor were the second and third draws played by Cat Shakin ’19 (#4) and co-captain, Sophie Browning ’19 (#3). Both finished with one win and three loses after powerful points where they chased down every shot from very talented opponents. Shakin finished thirteenth and Browning finished fourteenth in the second and third draws. Co-captain, Sabrina Harden ’19 (#1) competed against the best players in the tournament. She used her deceptive drop shot and long, attacking cross courts to win three matches and finish the tournament ninth in the #1’s draw. Our manager, Mao Matsuo ’19, was instrumental in administering the tournament, assigning players to courts and recording the scores into US Squash for each of the 256 matches played.

Competing in the NEISA New England Boys Squash Division A Tournament for the fourth year in a row, our five seniors led Boys’ Squash to a 12th place finish among the 45 squash teams in New England. Co-captain and #1 Aly Hussein ’19 captured his third New England Individual Championship while defeating talented opponents from Brunswick and Avon en route to his win. Co-captain and #4 Owen Sughrue ’19 earned close wins over Exeter and Milton, tallying 7 points for the team. Omar Kiwan ’20 played the best squash of his season, battling past Choate and Andover, and then securing a win in a well-played match with Deerfield’s #2 for a third-place finish. Additional wins by #4 Sean Huang ’19 over Taft and Berkshire, #5 Yudai Yamakawa ’19 over Groton, #6 Gary Chen ’20 over Avon, plus #7 Ryan Zeien’s ’19 unflagging support for the team,  pushed the Tabor team total to 47 points, taking 12th place in the most competitive squash division in the country.  The entire team celebrated with Aly for his remarkable achievement and four-year Tabor squash career, bringing home the #1 Draw New England trophy for another year in the Tabor trophy case. The five seniors set a standard for improvement, achievement, team spirit and sportsmanship that will stand for future Tabor squash teams to emulate.

Please be sure to come out and cheer on our remaining tournament competitors on Wednesday (our girls are home!)
