Athletes of the Week: Feb 12-18

Girls' Varsity Squash: Meredith Mahon & Nina Sasakawa
This is a dual athlete of the week. Often when the team needs to win, it is her contribution that pushes the team to victory. Meredith Mahon (#4) pulled out a major victory at Pomfret on the road. At Nationals, she won three of her four matches. The sole loss went to five games. It is Meredith’s ability to cross court volley a return of serve that creates pressure on her opponents who are moving towards the tee, when Meredith’s return puts them back into the corner. Volleying takes away time and space from opponents and Meredith’s strength is to volley any loose cross courts and force her opponents to make errors. Nina Sasakawa (#5) serves the same role in a different strategy. Nina also won three out of four of her matches at Nationals and posted a win against Brooks.Through hard serves her opponents give her weak returns that she applies pressure with. From that weak return, she sees their vulnerability in position and quickly drops them to end the point in just three strokes by Tabor. It takes any four games for a team to win a match in squash and these two players at #4 and #5 have been essential to Tabor throughout this year.

Wrestling: Shaymus MacIntosh
Shaymus MacIntosh won an ISL Championship (first for Tabor wrestling) at the 113 pound weight class. He wrestled a total of 1 minute and 48 seconds, pinning all 3 of his opponents in 35 seconds, 37 seconds, and 36 seconds. Great work Shaymus and best of luck at the N.E. tournament!
