International Dinners are Coming

Thanks to our Global Studies class, and the organization of our International Student leaders, a new program will be starting in February: International Dinners.

Rick DaSilva’s Global Studies class has been discussing ways to bring more global engagement to Tabor. Learning that our school has always, almost since our founding in 1876, been committed to international students, our students felt that we could take better advantage of the diverse backgrounds in our midst. Reaching out to classmates and faculty via survey and conversation, they began discussing many ideas to help Tabor students develop a more global point of view.

Among many ideas such as having news programs more accessible, as well as current event discussions, they suggested changes to our annual Asian Dinner. The class rightly suggested the name of event did not represent the breadth of countries typically represented at the feast. Students also hoped for a calmer, more enjoyable atmosphere conducive to learning about the countries represented.

Bringing these ideas to the International Co-Heads, DaSilva and his team began to plan. They decided it would be nice to stretch the meals out over the course of a month, allowing for some sharing of music, images, and perhaps other cultural elements: games, calligraphy, etc.   When they realized that many of our Chinese parents will be here in early February to celebrate the Chinese New Year, the leaders decided to begin with this celebration as our first International Dinner so that the parents could participate with the community. Our parents have often contributed to Asian Dinner in the past with favorite recipes and treats.

As the month goes on, other countries will be featured each of the following Wednesday nights in February. The subsequent dinners will feature two or three countries and will include tastings of favorite and traditional foods, as well as information about the culture of the countries presented. Students will help plan each countries presentation allowing us to sample some new cuisines and cultures from around the world. "International Dinner will be a great opportunity to present the beauties of different cultures to the entire school, which is why it is so important to recognize every country through the individual dinners," said one of the organizers Yu “Daisy” Ye ’19

We look forward to some more great suggestions from our global citizens at Tabor!
