A New Year, A New Look for Sammy the Seawolf

After years of Tabor’s mascot, Sammy, appearing as multiple variations of clip art, ranging from a blood-thirsty Seawolf to a happy-go-lucky dolphin, we are excited to unveil a new logo.

The new Sammy will serve as the school’s athletic logo, with two versions: a determined Seawolf arcing above the sea and the same Seawolf with the letters TA integrated along the fin. New wordmarks for “Tabor Academy” and “Seawolves” were also created, using a custom-made typeface.

“Sammy has been in need of updating for years,” states Tabor alum Rick DaSilva ’89. “It’s been disappointing for me to see so many different versions of Sammy on a daily basis, none of which accurately represent the Tabor community.” At Rick’s urging, Tabor’s Communications department teamed up with the Athletics department to hire Texas-based illustrator, Rene Sanchez, to bring a new tenacious, modern look to Sammy. Our heads of school, Owen Sughrue ’19 and Sophie Browning ’19, brought student perspectives into the creative process, and have been integral in planning the initial reveal — all while keeping it top-secret from the student body.

The new logos will be seen throughout campus in the coming months, and they will appear on athletic uniforms and gear as equipment needs to be replaced. Apparel with the new logo will be available for purchase at the Tabor Shop or online at Tabor’s sideline store.

The big reveal came during Tabor’s All-School meeting on January 15, when athletic team captains, including Sophie and Owen, modeled the new logo on t-shirts while a video of the logo in the making played on the big screen. The students then lined the aisles, tossing shirts into the audience. “The rollout won’t happen all of a sudden,” athletic director Conan Leary ’97 said. “The old Sammy logos will be transitioned out and updated through the course of natural use. That being said, all current Tabor students have at least one piece of clothing with the new logo on it.”
The new logos and typography come as Tabor is in its second year of ISL league play. In the 2017-18 school year, our Girls’ Varsity Hockey and Varsity Basketball both became ISL champions. So far this year, the Boys’ Cross Country team earned that prize as well.

Additionally, the logos will be unveiled throughout the spring at multiple alumni events taking place in Florida, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C.
