On November 2, Tabor Boys Cross Country won their first ISL championship! This is the first ISL championship we have won this school year, and our first in fall sports since we joined the league last fall.
According to Coach Chris Adams, Aly Hussein ’19 was the individual champion of the meet, one of five Tabor runners solidly commanding the top 18 spots in the championship race. Aly led the pack from the start to finish by 24 seconds on the slow, muddy 5K course. This is Aly’s 3rd championship win in Cross Country, winning the New England championship as a sophomore, and the ISL championship as a junior last year. Aly, who owns a 5K personal best of 15:40, has been a dominating force in prep school running for the past three years.
The overall team effort was a show of determination, putting us through to a nail-biting win! The squad won with the narrowest possible margin – just one point over Roxbury Latin, a cross country powerhouse in the ISL.
Coach Adams was so proud of all the runners, and he later described the points scored through individual effort in an email to the community. “Just behind Aly, Yudai Yamakawa ’19 ran in the next pack of six runners the entire race before falling head over heels down a steep downhill with 250 meters to go. He jumped back to his feet and chased after the two kids who passed him when he fell. He caught one, then beat the second runner, from Roxbury Latin, at the finish line, earning 6th place. That was good for one point. Meanwhile, Yudai’s brother, Mahiro Yamakawa ’20 had gone out fast in the top ten and was falling back a bit in the last mile, but secured a photo finish at the line nipping Roxbury Latin’s fourth man for 15th by a fraction of a second. That was the second point won on the line over Roxbury Latin! Then, Sam Gordon ’19 came on strong the last mile to take 17th , while Andrew Mottur ’21 had a phenomenal race taking 18th place. Jack Hutchison ’20 finished 33rd and Alec Durkin ’19 was 66th overall for TA’s varsity squad.”
The team is looking forward to the New England’s next week and we wish them all the best! They are certainly a powerful group of runners for Tabor!
(AN UPDATE: The team ended up finishing 2nd in the New England's: Roxbury Latin prevailed this time!!)
