Archer M. Macy Jr. ’71

Retired US Navy Rear Admiral Archer M. Macy Jr. is a distinguished veteran of the Navy where he served as a surface warfare officer, combat systems engineer and acquisition professional. He has a B.S. and M.S. in aeronautical engineering, and a M.A. in national security and strategic studies. Macy has commanded at sea and ashore, and as a flag officer served as the director of Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technology and Training for the Department of Defense, established the Joint Counter-IED Electronic Warfare (CREW) program, and commanded the Naval Surface Warfare Center, responsible for research, technical, and engineering support for the Navy’s surface ships and aircraft carriers. In his last assignment, Macy was the Deputy Director (J-8) for Force Protection on the Joint Staff.
Macy’s awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit with Gold Star, the Meritorious Service Medal with Three Gold Stars, the Navy Commendation Medal with two Gold Stars, the Navy Achievement Medal, the Navy Good Conduct Medal, and numerous unit and campaign awards.
In 2011, Macy retired from the United States Navy after 39 years of service. From 2012-2017, he was vice president for Navy Programs at the consulting firm of Cypress International Inc. in Alexandria, Virginia.  Macy is currently a Senior Associate at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, Washington, DC, and a Senior Fellow at the Center for Naval Analyses, Arlington, Virginia.
