Future of Professional Sports

Joby Branion ’81 is one of the foremost sports agents in America. He has a front-row seat to the lives of professional athletes and the inner workings of the leagues in which they compete. Joby will share his thoughts on the future of professional sports, particularly the NFL, NBA, and MLB, and explain how the coronavirus pandemic will impact athletes as well as the casual and everyday fan.

After graduating from Tabor Academy in 1981, Joby Branion earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science and philosophy from Duke University. A four-year starter on the Blue Devils football team, Branion had a brief stint with the Washington Football Team. Later, he returned to Duke and became the Associate Director of Admissions, where he gained national notoriety for his successes in enrolling underrepresented students. After six years in Duke’s Admissions Office, Branion enrolled at UCLA where he earned both his Juris Doctorate and MBA in 1995.

Upon graduation, he practiced as a corporate lawyer at an entertainment law firm in Los Angeles. In the fall of 1996, legendary sports agent Leigh Steinberg, often credited as the real-life inspiration for Jerry Maguire, convinced him to make the jump from corporate law to sports representation. After five years with Steinberg, Branion left Steinberg, Moorad & Dunn in 2001 to co-found and guide Athletes First, which was ranked the No. 2 most valuable NFL agency by Forbes in July 2014.

Branion founded Vanguard Sports Group in the fall of 2014. Vanguard represents athletes in the NFL, NBA, and MLB. His decision to create Vanguard Sports was driven by his realization that sports agencies were not doing enough to “add real value” to their clients’ personal and professional lives. Branion is setting a new standard, unrivaled in the industry, by aggressively and proactively investing in his clients–ensuring that they not only maximize their professional opportunities, but also successfully transition from “former” athlete to the next stage in their lives. Branion has negotiated over one billion dollars in contracts, including making Von Miller of the Denver Broncos the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history.
