A familiar face has been named the new Head Coach for Tabor Academy Baseball. “I’m excited for Matt Karis to take on the head coach role for our baseball program. He is passionate about the sport, and works hard throughout the summer with a team as well,” says Kelly Walker, Director of Athletics and Co-Curriculars. “He will bring his energy and love of the game to the program; Tabor baseball is lucky to have him at the helm.”
Karis has been an instrumental piece to the success of Tabor baseball as an assistant the past two seasons. Both years they posted a winning record in the ISL, including a 10-4-1 season this year. Karis’ primary role was working with the pitchers. His success was evident throughout the season, a highlight being UConn bound Cole Taylor ’24 throwing a no hitter against Brooks.
Kenneth Ackerman, current Head Coach, was elated to hear the news. “He’s the right guy to take our program to the next level. He cares about his players, is a baseball guy through and through, is an educator first, and can recruit and develop talent. He’s the whole package,” exclaims Ackerman.
Prior to Tabor, Karis spent nine years coaching baseball. He was the pitching coach for Massachusetts powerhouse Austin Prep for two years. Prior to that, Karis was Head Coach at the Eaglebrook School. In the college ranks, he was a pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Elms College.
Karis is no stranger to the ISL. He was a heralded pitcher at Noble and Greenough, garnering All ISL honors and going on to play at Gettysburg College as an intricate player in their program. Karis is one of the few players to pitch while still being an everyday field player. As a freshman, he led the team in earned run average, as sophomore in wins and complete games, and was All-Centennial Conference Honorable Mention as a junior. Post college, Karis was a dominant pitcher in the Great Boston Amateur League, posting an 8-1 record in the 2013 season.
“I am extremely grateful to the school and the athletic department for this opportunity to take over the program from the great human being and coach Kenny Ackerman. His passion for the job and the student athletes goes unmatched,” shares Karis. “I'm thankful for my wife, Jessica, who also teaches at Tabor and allows me to pursue my passion of working with our student-athletes for countless hours. I'm looking forward to getting to work with the guys we have and welcoming new students to Tabor as we build on the recent success we have had. Our goal is to compete for ISL championships and do it the right way on and off the field. We are excited to have a strong team coming back with plenty of depth in key spots and continue to build a strong program here at Tabor.”
