Going to the Games!

Olympic talent runs deep at Tabor, with yet another former athlete qualifying for the Games. Gia Doonan ’13 was named as one of 30 rowers selected to represent the United States at the 2020/2021 Tokyo Olympics, according to the United States Rowing Association. She will row as part of the three-time defending Olympic champion women’s eight. If the U.S. wins again in Tokyo, it would set a record for most consecutive Olympic gold medals in the event. Currently, the U.S. and Romania are tied with three golds.

Doonan, who discovered the sport at Tabor, follows in the footsteps of other great Tabor rowing athletes, including fellow Tabor Olympian Charlie Clapp ’76, whose own Olympic rowing career earned him two medals.  

After graduating from Tabor, Doonan went on to row at University of Texas. She has been a member of the USRowing Senior National Team since 2017 and competed for the United States at the 2018 and 2019 World Rowing Championships and World Rowing Cup. In 2019, Doonan rowed with the eight in their third-place finish at the World Rowing Championships in Ottensheim, Austria. She also was a member of the four that took second at the World Rowing Cup I and the eight that finished second at the World Rowing Cup II in Poznan, Poland. Doonan finished ninth in the pair and first in the eight at the 2018 World Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria and placed third in the eight at the 2018 World Rowing Cup III in Lucerne, Switzerland. As a member of the United States U23 team, Doonan helped the Americans win gold in the 8+ and 4- at the 2016 World Rowing Under-23 Championships in Rotterdam, Netherlands.
