Innovating Public Service
In the ever-changing landscape of government operations, Christian Michael Gibbs ’92 has forged a path in government consulting that bridges the gap between technology and public service.
Gibbs harnesses the power of cutting-edge technology to transform and enhance services for communities across the United States. As the founder of Unified Strategic Resources—a consulting firm specializing in management consulting and IT implementation—Gibbs transforms complex government operations into efficient, tech-driven systems.
He notes that his entry into the government sector happened organically, first starting out as a project manager with clients in the Department of HUD and the US Army Corps of Engineers. Now having worked in the sector for over 20 years, Gibbs says that he has gradually become more proficient in “governmentese,” the specific language and nuances of government operations. His extensive experience in this space has made him adept at understanding and addressing government needs.
His work experience led to the founding of Unified Strategic Resources (Unified) in 2014. What was initially created as a side project to leverage his consulting expertise, by 2017, had evolved into a full-fledged consulting firm specializing in management consulting and IT implementation.
Unified primarily serves the public sector, with a diverse portfolio of projects across federal, state, and local government agencies. The firm focuses on integrating advanced technologies into government operations to streamline their processes. Gibbs explains, “We primarily focus our technology offerings in business process management, business process automation, and data services.” This includes the use of robotic process automation (RPA) tools like Pega systems, as well as data analytics platforms such as MS SQL, Power BI, and Tableau.
One notable project involved supporting the Department of Labor’s Job Corps Centers during the COVID-19 pandemic, leveraging technology for the public good. Gibbs and his team provided epidemiology and business analyst work site assessments, and they created dashboards to help centers resume operations safely. “We work with all 120-something Job Corps Centers, helping keep their operations going,” says Gibbs, emphasizing the critical role of data analytics in their success. “A lot of the work we do is really to drive home efficiency, effectiveness, and interconnected government, making sure that we, as U.S. citizens, are getting what we pay for with our taxes.”
The impact of Gibbs’ work extends beyond just technology. His projects often involve strategic planning, training, and professional development, aimed at enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of government services. He adds, “The work we do for CNIC [Commander, Navy Installations Command] and the Navy, for example, helps people find jobs.” This effort contributes to improving employment rates and providing stable, long-term career opportunities for many individuals.
Gibbs’ firm also engages in initiatives like trauma-informed care training for municipal workers, underscoring his commitment to addressing public service and the human side of government.
Gibbs’ dedication to public service is deeply rooted in his experiences at Tabor Academy. “The ability to break down information quickly and comprehend the needs of my clients started at Tabor,” Gibbs notes, crediting the school for shaping his professional skills and network. He maintains strong connections with classmates and faculty today, including working closely with Khalil Johnson ’91, a former Tabor English Teacher. Johnson works as the Vice President of Shared Services at Gibbs’ firm.
Before attending Tabor, Gibbs shares that he was rather shy; the school helped him develop the confidence and social skills that have been essential in his professional life. Gibbs admits that his journey truly began at the School by the Sea, where he cultivated a passion for history and problem-solving. “The skills I have in terms of being able to write and break down inordinate amounts of information really got honed at Tabor.” After graduating from Tabor, Gibbs pursued an undergraduate degree at Emory University and completed his graduate studies at California State University (Cal State) in the Bay Area.
For those interested in following a similar path, Gibbs offers practical advice. He suggests gaining experience through large consulting firms to learn the ropes or working in smaller firms to wear multiple hats and develop a broad skill set. “It’s hard work,” he admits, “but understanding how to build relationships and conduct thorough research can significantly increase your chances of success.”
A commitment to enhancing government efficiency and effectiveness, combined with a deep-rooted passion for public service, continues to drive Gibbs to generate meaningful change across the United States. As he looks to the future, he remains dedicated to using his expertise to support communities and improve government services for all.
